Music

Music education at St Mary's Coptic Orthodox College (SMCO) enriches every student’s school experience, developing their cognitive, emotional, and social skills in a vibrant learning environment.

“My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You, And my soul, which You have redeemed.”

- Psalm 71:23

Expanding Creativity and Community Spirit

SMCO students strengthen aural, vocal, and instrumental abilities through lessons in singing, playing, composing, and exploring world music. Exceptional musicians join a variety of extra activities and performances that celebrate talent and unity, ensuring music continues to uplift and connect the entire school community.

Our Music Programs

SMCO offers dynamic music programs, including private singing and instrumental lessons, choirs, high school bands, orchestras, djembe drumming, and performance opportunities at competitions and College events. Music workshops with Musica Viva connect students to acclaimed musicians, fostering group harmony, creativity, and skill development that enriches the entire school community.

Primary Music Classroom

SMCO’s Music Block features three purpose-built classrooms for primary, secondary, and private lessons, supporting collaborative learning, rehearsals, and musical excellence across all year levels.

The Primary Music Classroom at SMCO is vibrant and fully equipped to inspire young musicians. Walls display charts for musical elements, instrument families, traditional notation, recorder and ukulele chords, keyboard layouts, and motivating music quotes, all supporting student learning. A wide range of small untuned percussion instruments, uncluding tambourines, bongos, triangles, maracas, claves, jingle bells, cymbals, and different wooden blocks encourage rhythmic creativity. Tuned percussion options include glockenspiels, xylophones, boom whackers, and hand bells.

Students have access to ten keyboards, a class set of ukuleles, a full set of djembe drums and dun-duns, microphones with an amplifier, iPads loaded with music apps, and an Apple TV with a projector. The adjacent Instrumental/Singing and Rehearsal Room provides additional facilities with drum kits, pianos, guitars, violins, amps, and music stands, making it perfect for lessons and ensemble rehearsals.

Secondary Music Classroom

The Secondary School Music Classroom at SMCO provides a dynamic environment for students to advance their musical skills.

Keyboards and acoustic guitars line the walls, ensuring students have regular hands-on experience with instruments during lessons and assessments. Students explore a wide array of musical genres and perform both solo and ensemble pieces, while also learning to create and record their own music. The classroom is equipped with keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, electric basses, drums, microphones, speakers, amplifiers, iRig recording interfaces, iPads loaded with music apps and software, and a projector.

These resources support comprehensive learning in music theory, performance, and production, empowering students to grow confidently as musicians.
