Saint Mary's Coptic Orthodox College (SMCO) draws its strength and purpose from its Coptic Orthodox Christian identity, reflected in every aspect of College life through faith, tradition, and community.
Pillars
Grounded in our Coptic Orthodox faith, we intertwine its five core pillars: worship, religious education, evangelism, fellowship, and service throughout every diverse learning experience offered at SMCO.
Worship
Worship is at the heart of our identity, with daily prayers and regular liturgies immersing students in Coptic Orthodox tradition. SMCO & St Philopateer Church provides a sacred space for communal and private prayer, nurturing spiritual growth and personal stillness throughout each student’s journey.
Teaching
At SMCO, daily sermons provide students with spiritual nourishment through scripture, reflections, and teachings rooted in Orthodox tradition. This morning practice empowers students to face daily challenges with a Christ-centred mindset, linking timeless faith principles to contemporary life in a meaningful, relatable way.
Fellowship
Fellowship is nurtured in weekly religion classes where students gather in close-knit groups to discuss faith and salvation. This supportive environment empower our students to deepen their beliefs and become confident ambassadors of the Christian message in their communities.
Service
At SMCO, students actively serve through preparing and participating in our Church’s blessed feasts. From event planning to liturgical roles, every student plays a valuable part in celebrating our rich Oriental Orthodox faith and living it daily with meaningful service to God and community.
Evangelism
At SMCO, evangelism flourishes through rich Coptic traditions like feasts, fasts, and hymnology, woven deeply into student life. Celebrations, bi-weekly prayers, and our vibrant College choir provide joyful, faith-filled opportunities for students to express their God-given talents and live their heritage with pride.

Proudly affiliated with Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Melbourne
The Diocese, under the guidance and auspices of His Grace Bishop Rewis, is a beacon of faith, culture and community, bringing together Copts from diverse backgrounds.
His Grace Bishop Rewis was appointed as General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Melbourne by Papal Decree No. 2 of 2025, issued and signed by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II. His Holiness was enthroned as the 118th Pope of Alexandria and Pope of the See of St. Mark on November 19th, 2012 at the Cathedral of St. Reweiss in Abbassiya, Cairo. The enthronement was presided by H.E. Metropolitan Pakhomius of Beheira, other metropolitans and bishops of the Coptic Church and was attended by many delegates of Christian Churches.
The appointment of His Grace Bishop Rewis, effective 1 July 2025, marks a moment of great joy and blessing for the Diocese. As General Bishop of the Diocese of Melbourne, His Grace Bishop Rewis has been entrusted with the full pastoral, administrative and financial authority of the Diocese, as delegated by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II. In this role, His Grace is responsible for overseeing the spiritual life of the clergy and congregation, guiding the operational and organisational structure of the Diocese, and ensuring sound stewardship of its financial and material resources.
SMCO & Saint Philopateer Church
At the heart of our campus is SMCO & St Philopateer Church, a sacred space that nurtures the spiritual life of our College. Surrounded by rich Coptic iconography, students regularly gather here for worship and to participate in the divine Eucharist. The church is open throughout the day, including recess and lunchtime, offering a quiet place for prayer, reflection, and stillness. In this way, our students are invited not only to grow academically, but also to deepen their relationship with God and find peace, guidance, and comfort in His presence.
The Ever Virgin, St Mary
At SMCO, we cherish our patroness, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos, whose love and protection guide our College family. As the only Coptic Orthodox school in Melbourne, we honour her through prayer, feasts, and daily intercessions, trusting in her constant care to bless our students and nurture their journey of faith and learning.
