Saint Mary's Coptic Orthodox College (SMCO) is a supportive, inclusive environment where each child's God-given potential is nurtured through Christ-centered education, fostering faith, excellence, service, and integrity within the Coptic Orthodox tradition.

Our mission is to provide a Christ-centred coeducation that nurtures each student’s God-given potential, cultivating academic excellence, strong character, and a deep sense of service and purpose.

It is our Vision to be a leading Christian College in Australia, grounded in the Coptic Orthodox Church, known for empowering students to grow in faith, achieve academic excellence, and become compassionate leaders who serve and shape their world through God.

Ethos

The following expresses our ethos as a Coptic Orthodox College, dedicated to fostering and developing an awareness of Christ and His teachings within a spiritual, safe, and nurturing environment.

As a Coptic Orthodox College, we recognise that we exist to foster and develop, within a Christian Coptic Orthodox environment, an awareness of Christ and His teachings. We seek to do this by providing and maintaining the general spiritual, safe atmosphere where children are nurtured and developed in the Coptic Orthodox faith. We see maintaining the Coptic identity and the teaching of the Coptic Orthodox religion and Coptic language as essential for the College.

We aim to create a positive atmosphere in which children and young people can grow and learn, developing a high level of personal integrity and a sincere respect of others with their varying cultural, academic and socio-economic differences.

SMCO is committed to creating a culture of child safety to minimize or eliminate, as much as possible, risk of harm to children and young people.

At SMCO we respect and appreciate the value of each person as an individual. We encourage children and young people to be aware of the demands of living in a multicultural society. It is our aim to develop self-respect, self-determination, personal initiative and a sense of community to prepare them to be respected and honourable citizens in a global community.

SMCO exists to provide a Christ-centred education that nurtures the whole child spiritually, academically, socially, and emotionally. Rooted in the sacred tradition of the Coptic Orthodox Church, we view education as a journey of faith and growth that shapes both hearts and minds.

God-given Potential

We believe every student is created in the image of God and entrusted with unique gifts and a divine potential. Our mission is to cultivate these gifts by placing Christ at the centre of learning, guiding students to grow in faith, strive for excellence, and develop Christ-like character.

Grounded in biblical truth and Orthodox tradition, our College fosters a love of learning, a spirit of service, and integrity of character. SMCO offers a dynamic learning community, which is built upon strong academic and biblical foundations. Furthermore, the Pastoral Care program we offer facilitates character development through our core values: Coptic Orthodox faith, academic excellence, respect and effective safety. In addition, our Wellbeing Team also focuses on providing high quality students services to nurture the developmental needs of all students.

Statement of Democratic Principles

The Education and Reform Act 2006 requires all education providers to operate in a manner consistent with Australian democratic principles. In accordance with the Act, SMCO delivers curriculum programs and learning and teaching in a manner that supports and promotes the principles and practice of Australian democracy. This includes the following commitments:

SMCO, together with all Australian citizens, recognise the freedom to pursue religious beliefs and to follow a religious view that is founded upon those beliefs. We commit to the fundamental freedoms of speech and association for all Australians so long as those freedoms are not used to subvert the rule of law.
We acknowledge the right of our elected Governments, their departments and officers to require certain conditions relating to the programs and teaching practices in our College.
We are committed to the rule of law and acknowledge that all persons are entitled to be treated equally before the law and, as far as it is within our capacity to do so, we endeavour to treat all members of our community with equity and fairness.
We are committed to living in peace with our fellow Australians irrespective of differences in faith, race or culture, and are committed to the social value of respect for all persons. SMCO is committed to the values of openness and tolerance.

Promotion of Democratic Principles

SMCO promotes and communicates the principles and practice of Australian democracy by implementing the following strategies:

The College Ethos is based on the purpose of a Coptic Orthodox school and seeks to assist students to become active members of the Coptic Orthodox Church as well as the wider community. It promotes the common good of society and Australian democratic principles and values.
The curriculum program is based on the Australian Curriculum F–10 which develops in students: 
- a lifelong sense of belonging to, and engagement with, civic life as an active and informed citizen in the context of Australia as a secular democratic nation with a dynamic, multicultural and multi-faith society.
- knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the values, principles, institutions and practices of Australia’s system of democratic government and law, and the role of the citizen in Australian government and society. 
- skills necessary to investigate contemporary civics and citizenship issues, and foster responsible participation in Australia’s democracy. 
- knowledge, skills and capacities and dispositions to participate in the civic life of their nation at a local, regional and global level.
The College’s Australian Democratic Principles Statement and College Ethos are available on the College website.
As part of the induction process, the Democratic Principles are included on the Staff Policy Portal and staff are made aware of the integration of the democratic principles into the curriculum and the life of the College.
SMCO Australian Democratic Principles Statement is included in the Parent Handbooks, which are available on the College website.
Parents/carers and students are provided with a Student Handbook that outlines the curriculum and learning and teaching for each year level.

Commitment to Child Safety

SMCO has zero tolerance for child abuse and will treat seriously all allegations and concerns in this regard. Our College operates under the governance of St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College Pty Ltd and complies with all civil regulations. The College is committed to upholding the Child Safe Standards, Ministerial Order 1359, the Mandatory Reporting requirements, and the Minimum Standards for School Registration as set by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA).

Compliance

SMCO is committed to compliance with civil regulations. The College is accredited by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA).

All our staff are appropriately qualified, and teachers are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teachers (VIT). Our curriculum is compliant with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), and our graduates are eligible for university entrance through the Victrian ATAR system. The College delivers its curriculum through the Australian Curriculum, reflecting its guidelines and standards.
