Sport

We believe sport and physical activity are vital for wellbeing. As such, all students at St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College (SMCO) are encouraged to participate through Inter-House and Inter-School sporting pathways.

Two Pathways to Access Sport

SMCO offers two approaches to sport – inter-house events and inter-school competitions.

Inter-House Sport

At SMCO, every student is proudly allocated to a House for their entire school journey, fostering a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie. Inter-House competitions in swimming, athletics, and cross country are held throughout the year, welcoming students of all abilities. These events encourage friendly rivalry, teamwork, and school spirit while promoting health and wellbeing. Physical Education staff ensure an inclusive, safe environment where participation and enjoyment are valued above all, helping students build confidence, celebrate achievements, and form lasting connections with their peers.

Inter-School Sport - School Sport Victoria (SSV)

SMCO competes in School Sport Victoria’s Woodland Division, with 150–200 students representing the College annually across a broad range of sports. These inter-school competitions, including soccer, baseball, badminton, table tennis, athletics, swimming, and cross country for both boys and girls, provide meaningful opportunities for students to develop leadership, resilience, and character. Success is celebrated enthusiastically, but the primary focus remains personal growth, teamwork, and proudly representing the College, fostering a spirit of achievement and connection beyond the classroom.

Sporting Facilities

SMCO offers excellent sporting facilities that promote physical activity and participation. Our large gymnasium caters to basketball, soccer, volleyball, and hockey, and includes an upstairs fitness centre for senior students. Outside, students enjoy a spacious oval, enclosed soccer pitch, outdoor basketball hoops, synthetic grass area, and a dedicated Primary playground. These facilities provide diverse opportunities for students to engage in a wide range of sports, supporting their health, fitness, and teamwork development throughout their school journey.
