SMCOC HISTORY
St Mary's Coptic Orthodox College was officially opened on 23rd February 1991 by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III.
The College was founded in 1991 as a primary school, with 51 pupils in rented premises in 256 Queens Parade, Clifton Hill by the Coptic Orthodox community under the Directorship of Father Tadros Sharobeam. In 1994, our first Year 7 students cohort began and we have added a new year level each year since then until we were a F-12 College. In 1994, we also moved to our present site in Coolaroo, which was refurbished in 1996. Since that date, we have continued to develop the site and we opened our new Gymnasium and Chapel in April, 2007 and our new Library, Science Labs, Language Lab and Support wing in 2010. In 2012, the College secured a grant from the Federal Government, which enabled us to build a two-storey building, which added a new Primary School Library, two new VCE Science Laboratories, a workshop and more VCE classrooms. In 2015, the College opened a new building, which included more classes for the Primary School and an additional Art Room.
In 2015, three portable classrooms were added. They are used for Music classes for Primary and Secondary schools. In 2020, five portable classrooms were added. The College is now able to assign a separate room for each grade. Five rooms are assigned for VCE classes. The College also currently has five Science Laboratories, two Art Rooms, a Food Technology Room and a Robotics Room.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 Lockdown, the College was able to use the time of Lockdown, where most of the classes were conducted online, to refurbish and extend all old toilets for staff and students. In 2019 and 2020 another 5 portable classrooms were added and now every class has their own permanent classroom. Now, every class has their own permanent classroom.
Seven new buses were added to the College fleet of buses, replacing old busses.
