PRIMARY & SECONDARY LIBRARIES
THE PRIMARY LIBRARY
Our Primary library is a friendly and busy place, whose prime aim is to encourage children to read, reflect, wonder, question and learn. The Primary Library supports the teaching and learning of classroom programs and aims to foster students’ reading skills and their love of literature.
The Resource Collection
Our resource collection is constantly expanding and changing in order to keep it fresh, relevant and up-to- date.
Aimed at supporting and enhancing the classroom programs, it comprises:
- a collection of fiction books catering for Years 2 - 6 students,
- a collection of picture fiction books catering for Foundation - Year 6 students,
- a Big Book Collection, which is used extensively in the classrooms,
- literacy Collection, which supports the reading programs Foundation - Year 6,special Collections, such as Indigenous collection, Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas and Easter,
- a graphic book collection,
- a set of iPads for Primary students’ use,
- Teacher Reference collection for Primary teachers, including charts and posters,
- a state of the art cataloguing and retrieval system, Bibliotech,
- a collection of dictionaries, and
- a collection of posters supporting SMCOC’s curricula.
Our ServicesAll Primary students are timetabled to attend the Primary Library on a weekly basis. These sessions are taken by the classroom teacher and supported by a member of the Library Team. The classes are designed to develop the students’ appreciation and enjoyment of literature and their information and literacy skills. Students are given time to browse and select a book to take home to read.
Lunchtime SessionsOn a timetabled system, Primary students from Year 1 - Year 6 have the opportunity to visit the Primary Library at lunchtimes and participate in a variety of activities. These include playing board games, colouring themed sheets and utilising the iPads and Library computers. Students are also encouraged to use the comfortable atmosphere and furniture to read their favourite books or to undertake private study.

Special EventsEach year, our Primary students celebrate two major events; namely National Simultaneous Storytime and Book Week. During Book Week, we welcome guest authors and/or illustrators, hold competitions and host a spectacular dress-up character parade.
THE SECONDARY LIBRARY
The Secondary Library, located on the top floor of Building A, is always the hub of activity. Open for the entire day (lunchtime, and recess), the Secondary Library provides opportunities and facilities for a range of educational experiences for all of our Secondary students.
The Secondary Library enhances students’ learning outcomes by providing a range of programs, services and resources which support teaching and learning. It also supports and encourages students’ reading experiences.
The Resource Collection
Aimed at supporting and enriching the teaching of SMCOC’s curricula, resources include:
- a collection of fiction and non-fiction books,a suite of desktop Mac computers,
- a set of iPads for Secondary students’ use,
- a collection of Graphic novels,
- a collection of picture fiction books for Years 7 - 12 students,
- a Spinners collection housing books relating to the genre of humour, mystery and short sharp reads,
- a collection of Special Issues catering for our Years 10 - 12 students,
- Teacher Reference collection, which provides support materials for the classrooms,
- a selection of indoor games to challenge the mind, including chess sets and jigsaw puzzles,
- a state-of-the-art cataloguing and retrieval system, Bibliotech, which can be accessed via any College electronic device,
- a collection of Teacher Reference DVDs + USB Super Drives for playing via laptops,
- a collection of CD players for classroom use,
- access to the students’ photocopier,
- Television Monitor, used to show films and programs, and
online resources, such as Issues In society, Echo Newspaper Subscription, VCE Practice Exams.
Our Services
The Secondary Library is open at Recess and Lunchtime. It can accommodate up to 80 students.
All students from Year 7 - Year 12 are welcome to visit the Secondary Library during these times.
Students utilise the library in a number of ways:
- to return and borrow books,
- to undertake private study,
- to participate in chess games and/or other board games,
- to find a special nook and curl up with a book to read,
- to collaborate with their fellow students on work assignments, and
- to seek the assistance of a librarian to help with research or to recommend a good read.
Throughout the academic day, Secondary teachers bring their booked classes to the Secondary Library to engage in enquiry-based research. In conjunction with a member of the Secondary Library team, students are provided with appropriate print and online resources to assist them in their studies. In collaboration with the Teacher Librarian, information literacy skill sessions are held to enable students to consolidate the art of framing their own research questions, to locate and select a variety of enquiry-based learning online and print resources and to organise and present the results of their research. This includes the skill of compiling a bibliography to support their research.
Special Events
The Secondary Library’s brief is to be used for multi-purpose functions. Besides the traditional function of providing areas for quiet reading, clusters of small groups of students working together or a more formal setting of students sitting at the designated tables, the Secondary Library can also be converted into a venue for authors’/illustrators’ visits for large groups of students. It can also be transformed into a stage for companies performing for Book Week.
At times, the Secondary Library is also used to hold professional development sessions for SMCOC’s Staff.
Chess tournaments are also held in this library. In addition, at the end of the year, our Secondary Library becomes the ideal certified venue for holding the VCE exams.
Renaissance Reading Program
The Secondary Library Team has organised a special collection of books that support the Renaissance Reading Program for our Year 7 and Year 8 students. This program aims to enrich the students’ reading experiences and to develop their independent reading skills. Throughout the year, new titles will be added to this collection. Participating students will be booked into the Secondary Library to select and borrow their books and a library staff member will be on hand to assist them to navigate the special catalogue and to select an appropriate book.
