THE ARTS

VISUAL ARTSPrimary Art Room is the perfect place for our students’ artistic expression to develop. Primary Visual Arts Program is designed to challenge and encourage students to achieve their artistic potential in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Students develop their creativity and imagination, as well as refine their practical and fine motor skills. They learn to make choices when experimenting with materials, tools and techniques.

Students also have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of different art mediums, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, clay, sculpture and construction. Students learn to communicate through their art, respond to the artworks of others and gain appreciation from well-known artists.

Visual Arts students from Years 7 to VCE level have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of art media and processes such as drawing, painting, clay, 3D Art and digital art technologies, from iPad art to Adobe Photoshop with the Art Room iMacs.

They explore a wide range of art styles and art movements; from Coptic Art to past and contemporary art practices, from different cultural perspectives. Developing collaborative skills within project-based learning is a fundamental goal of the Visual Arts programme at St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College.

Students at selected Year levels go on excursions to visit art galleries to further enhance their appreciation and understanding of Visual Arts.

In addition, all students, Primary and Secondary, have the opportunity to showcase their talents to the College community and beyond at the annual Arts and Design Technologies Exhibition. The exhibition not only provides opportunities to celebrate student achievement but it also is in itself a valuable learning opportunity. Ideas, decisions and discussions that result from the exhibit feed the artistic cycle and lead to further artistic production.

The artworks produced by our talented students are celebrated and displayed around the College, in building corridors, the library, classrooms and Art Room.

The Visual Arts Club, which runs during lunchtime twice a week, allows students to explore and develop their own initiated art projects, as well as providing opportunities to get involved in a range of mural painting projects.

PERFORMING ARTS

Primary Performing Arts Program is a sequential, developmental program in which students experience the Performing Arts through creating, composing, critiquing, exploring and responding to performances. This program aims to provide the opportunity for our students to build their confidence, teamwork skills, creativity, improvisation, scripts and stage craft.

Students in the younger years, Foundation to Year 1, learn the fundamentals of Drama through performing in front of a familiar audience and they explore, experience and respond to music in a range of styles.

In Years 3 -6, students begin to communicate experiences, ideas, concepts, observations and emotions. They begin to use improvisation to express themselves through movement.

Students also begin learning scripts and stage craft as they develop confidence, teamwork and improvisation skills. Students make and respond to drama independently and collaboratively with their classmates and class teacher.

There are many opportunities for students to extend their performing arts experiences through participation in our Primary School concerts, as well as assembly performances.

Concerts

Primary students have the opportunity to participate in a whole-school production. This allows students to experience the hard work and dedication required to be part of a large-scale performance, with most of the choreography being designed by classroom teachers, Performing Arts teacher and themselves!

Throughout the year, there are many other opportunities for our talented performers to showcase their hard work. These include Open nights, instrumental concerts, College assemblies, the Art Exhibition and Harmony Day celebration.
